KTM has recalled 3,707 units of the 2019-2020 KTM 790 Adventure in the North American market. The brand is recalling the motorcycles for a fault in the front brakes of the ADV. According to the NHTSA, all 2019-2020 KTM 790 Adventure, Adventure R, and Adventure R Rally units manufactured between 14th February 2019 and 28th February 2020 included in the recall population.
The brand is recalling the select motorcycles as a component in the front brake system that does not meet the specified tolerance. According to the recall, there is a possibility that the preload force of the return spring on the brake master cylinder could be too low. This does not meet the manufacturer’s threshold, and this may lead to the brake lever not returning to its original position. This, in turn, may impair the functioning of the front brake. It is important to note that no reports of injuries or death reported about the recall.
As a remedy, KTM in North America will be replacing the Brake Master Cylinder Spring on the affected motorcycle. The brand also revealed that the new spring is more robust and larger than the old one. The brand will also be using the new spring on all the models currently in production. KTM will replace the recall components free of cost to the customer.
The recall came to notice when Customer Service received 79 reports regarding front brake issues on 2019 KTM 790 Adventure models worldwide. After the reports, KTM R&D and J.Juan SA, the brake components manufacturer, conducted testing and investigation. KTM noticed the first reports of the brake issue in November 2019. The study shortly after that in early 2020. In February 2021, KTM concluded the investigation and found the spring at fault. In April 2021, KTM AG Quality Management determined that the KTM 790 Adventure required the recall. KTM plans to notify the dealers between 28th April 2021 and 22nd July 2021. The brand will notify its customers from 21st May 2021 to 29th July 2021.
