KTM and Husqvarna are gearing up to introduce their first street-legal electric motorcycles by 2025. This development marks a pivotal moment for both brands, which have long been recognized for their prowess in the off-road and enduro segments.
KTM has been a pioneer in the electric motorcycle arena since the launch of the Freeride E in 2011. Despite this early foray, the company has yet to bring an electric street bike to market. However, recent filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that both KTM and its sister company Husqvarna are set to change this narrative with their upcoming models.
The documents indicate that KTM will introduce the Electric Freeride (Street Legal), while Husqvarna will launch the Electric Pioneer (Street Legal). Both models are expected to feature a 5.54kWh lithium-ion battery pack, aligning with the specifications of previous electric concepts from the brands. This battery capacity suggests a focus on balancing performance with range, making these bikes suitable for urban commuting and short-distance travel.
While detailed specifications are still under wraps, the VIN decoding documents provide some insights. The electric powertrain is expected to deliver around 5.54 kW (approximately 7.43 hp), which should offer a decent performance for city riding. Additionally, the inclusion of swappable battery technology, a feature seen in the Freeride E LV concept, could be a game-changer, allowing riders to quickly exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones. The battery capacity and range details are not clear as of now.
The introduction of street-legal electric motorcycles by KTM and Husqvarna is likely to have a substantial impact on the market.
