KTM is working on a semi-automatic gearbox. This unit is likely to be used in the next-generation 1290 engine bikes. It is said that this transmission will shift on its own as well as allow the rider to change the gears.
Unlike other systems on use on motorcycles, the KTM gearbox will use rocker arms, a centrifugal clutch and a separate gear control unit that will shift the gears. The unit will also have a parking brake, which will prevent rolling of the motorcycle on any slope or hill. This will also be able to offer some sort of anti-theft protection.
While the patent currently talks about the KTM LC8 V-twin motorcycle, we can expect KTM to bring it to their other bikes as well. This includes the likes of 1290 Super Adventure S, Super Adventure R, 1290 Super Duke R and 1290 Super Duke GT.
Honda currently uses a dual clutch gearbox on its range of bikes. Here, when the bike is switched off, the unit switches into neutral. To ensure locking of the bike, Honda uses a separate cable operated third brake lever that locks the rear wheel. However, this is not a sufficient deterrent against theft. While the bike will not roll away on its own, thieves might be able to make off with the bike.
That said, in KTM, the bike maker has made use of an L-shaped lever that locks the driving gears in the gearbox housing itself. It won’t be deactivated unless the motorcycle is switched on.
While the patent talks about the general system, it is not yet known how the rider will be able to shift through the gears. On Honda bikes, this is achieved using buttons on the handlebar. However, having a foot lever is more intuitive and natural when shifting the gears on the motorcycle.
