Koenigsegg’s Raxial Flux Motor for Motorcycles?

Swedish car manufacturer Koenigsegg has introduced the company’s newest innovation, the Quark electric motor. The new electric motor utilizes a novel torque/power-rich balance between radial (power-dense) and axial (torque-dense) flux topology dubbed Raxial Flux. The brand recently introduced the revolutionary 6-phase inverter called David. Koenigsegg now reveals that it has integrated two Quark E-motors with one David inverter, plus planetary gear sets, in order to create the class-leading Terrier, a torque vectoring EV-drive unit.

Quark E-Motor with Raxial Flux Topology

Koenigsegg’s Quark E-motor became the company key driver for the development in the Koenigsegg Gemera. The company continues the record-breaking legacy with the Quark E-motor to tap into torque-rich, ultra-compact power units for a wide range of applications. This includes EV powertrains, Aerospace, VTOL, Marine etc. The E-motor uses the fundamentals of magnetism, materials, cooling and packaging. Furthermore, the brand reveals that the Quark elementary particle is the only particle to experience all four fundamental forces. This includes electromagnetism, gravitation, strong interaction, and weak interaction.

Combination of Radial and Axial

Koenigsegg claims that the combination of radial and axial flux layout enables the best torque to power to weight ratio in the industry. Electric Motor Design Lead Dragos-Mihai Postariu also revealed that the Quark E-motor was designed for the low-speed range of the Gemera, where it requires “Brutal Acceleration”. At the same time, the high-speed aspect is taken over by the ICE engine. The brand also reveals that the first production version weighs just 30 kg and produces up to 250 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque. The Quark E-motor is also 28.5 kg in weight.

The Terrier E-Drive unit is also elasto-bolted to the monocoque or chassis directly. This potentially cuts away the complexity of added subframes or weight. To put things into perspective, the company has revealed an image of the Raxial Flux motor next to a 330ml can of beverage, showcasing its compactness.
