One of India’s most successful Korean automakers, Kia, has trademarked the name ‘Carens’ for use in India. According to sources, speculations, and spy shots, Kia will utilize this name on its upcoming new MPV for India. After the success with the Seltos upon its debut and the Sonet, the automaker plans to introduce a mid-sized MPV. Based on the test mule and spy shots, the MPV currently codenamed ‘KY’ will rival the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
Kia’s new ‘Carens’ MPV will likely use the SP2 platform as the same architecture underpins the Hyundai Creta and Seltos. The new MPV will probably sport three-row seating reminiscent of the Hyundai Alcazar and dual-tone machine-cut alloy wheels. The ‘Carens’ MPV will likely sport Kia’s signature heartbeat-style LED DRLs and headlamps based on spy shots. The spy shots also reveal roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, and a wider front air-dam, along with a longer wheelbase.
For its ‘Carens’ MPV, Kia will likely utilize the powertrains found on its Seltos and the Sonet. The Korean automaker could offer 1.5-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines shared with the Hyundai Alcazar. Along with providing multiple gearbox options that include both manual and automatic, Kia may offer a 6-seater or 7-seater layout. For the MPV, Kia is also likely to tune the engines for higher power output and increased efficiency.
Kia will likely launch the MPV during the first half of 2022 and compete directly with the Hyundai Alcazar. It will also be one of the only MPVs in its class to offer both petrol and diesel powertrains. Its other prime contenders are the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6, which only provide a petrol powertrain. Despite being a mid-size MPV, the Kia Carens could compete with 7-seater rivals belonging to higher segments. These include the Toyota Innova Crysta, Tata Safari, the newly launched Mahindra XUV700, and the MG Hector Plus.
