Back in 2020, Kia launched the Intelligent Transmission technology (iMT) as an option with the Sonet petrol models. This was sollowed up with the Seltos petrol variants in 2021. Now, the carmaker has launched the iMT tech in the 2023 Kia Sonet. This is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. Prices for the Kia Sonet iMT start from INR 9.95 lakh.
What’s new in the 2023 Sonet iMT?
Now, Kia is offering all the 2023 versions of the Sonet with the 6iMT as the standard option. Apart from this all the engines offered with the compact SUV are compliant with the RDE emission norms. This have kicked in from April 01, 2023.
The Korean carmaker expects that this technology will help elevate the driving experience of customers who are currently offered with heavy clutches of the diesel engined cars in India. Further, the traffic and road conditions would make the iMT a better alternative to manual transmission.
How does the iMT technology work?
When compared with conventional manual gearbox, the iMT offers the added benefit of elimination of the clutch pedal. This in turns negates clutch fatigue and the possibility of stalling the engine in higher speeds at lower rpms. As an added benefit, Kia claims iMT equipped cars will offer buffer fuel economy. This is due to the fact that the clutch function is controlled by actuators along with the Transmission Control unit or the TCU.
Infact, in 2022, Kia says 33 percent of Sonet customers preferred iMT variants instead of manual boxes.
Other features on the 2023 Kia Sonet
Thanks to the new emission norms, one of the new features include the Idle Stop and Go (ISG) system. Buyers will also get ISOFIX mounts for the rear seats and adjustable rear headrests as standard across the range. Further, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) feature is now a standard safety feature in the diesel-powered version of Sonet. The Korean carmaker also offers the Kia Connect Skill for Amazon Alexa, which gives access to a range of features.

Kia now offered three engine options on the Sonet. These include the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine good for 83 HP, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol developing 120 HP and a 115 HP 1.5-litre diesel engine.
