Kia planning to launch hybrid cars in India?

Written by News Team

Hybrids have seen a good rise in India and are more adaptable than EVs. Not only do they offer good fuel economy, but they also add some fun when driving them. While we already have Toyota and Maruti Suzuki selling hybrids in India, Kia India has also made it clear that they want a piece of the hybrid pie.

Why the move?

According to sources, Kia is working on new technologies that could replace the diesel powertrain. This does not mean that the production of diesel vehicles will be stopped. Kia India still wants to supply to the diesel car demand in India. Diesel cars contribute to 40% of total sales for Kia India and they would keep making diesel cars till the demand is there or as long as government regulations allow them to. The introduction of this hybrid powertrain could come in 2025.

Kia’s Existing Hybrid Portfolio

Globally, Kia already has quite a few hybrid models that are doing well in terms of sales. The newly showcased Carnival, the Sorento, Sportage, Niro Crossover, and the K8 Sedan all have a 1.6L turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor. While the Carnival will make its appearance in India, we will still need to see if it comes with a hybrid powertrain. The smaller cars too could do well in India.

Hybridization of Current Fleet

To keep costs in check, Kia India could work on technologies to hybridize the current fleet. Meaning, the Sonet, the Carens and the Seltos could get the hybrid powertrain paired to either the 1.2L or the 1.5L engine. This move could be a feasible one for Kia India as they already have a production line for the Carens, Seltos and the Sonet. Production can be ramped up easily as demand increases.

Hybrids are the future?

Well, it’s too early to say if hybrids will be the future. However, hybrids are more easy to adapt to than EVs. Also, if we look at the current statistics, hybrids have already overtaken EV sales. In a way, hybrids make sense as they offer better fuel economy and power when required.
