Kia Carens scores 3-Star Global NCAP crash test result

Global NCAP has announced the crash test ratings for the Kia Carens MPV for the Indian market. The charitable institution continues to test cars on sale in India under the #SaferCarsForIndia initiative. Global NCAP has revealed that the Kia Carens received 3-stars for Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection. Kia’s latest model scored 9.30 out of 17 for Adult Occupant Protection. At the same time, it scored 30.99 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection.

Kia Carens – Adult Occupant Protection

As per Global NCAP, the Carens offered good protection to the driver’s and passenger’s heads and necks. The MPV offered marginal protection to the driver’s chest but good protection to the passenger’s chest. The driver’s and passenger’s knees showed marginal protection. This is because they can impact dangerous structures behind the dashboard. Driver’s tibias showed adequate and good protection while passenger’s tibias showed good protection.

Global NCAP rated the bodyshell and footwell area of the Carens as unstable. This was because they were not capable of withstanding further loadings. The Kia Carens offers standard SBR for driver and passenger. Furthermore, the UN95 test showed that the car could pass the requirements. All these factors explain the 3-star rating for the Carens MPV.

Kia Carens – Child Occupant Protection

Global NCAP installed the FWF child seat for the 3-year-old with ISOFIX and top tether. However, the car was not able to prevent excessive head excursion during the impact. Hence, it offered poor protection to the chest and fair protection to the chest. On the other hand, the 1.5-year-old RWF child seat with ISOFIX and support leg fared better. It was able to prevent head exposure during the impact. Hence, the Carens offered good protection to the head and the chest. Global NCAP states CRS marking was ok. The recommended CRSs did not show any incompatibilities.

The Kia Carens does not offer a 3-point seat belt in all seating positions. The rear centre position gets a lap belt. Also, it does not offer ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard positions. However, Global NCAP did not mark this. All of the above explains the 3-star rating for Child Occupant Protection.
