Madras International Circuit (MIC) is getting ready to inaugurate a new Karting facility which has been christened the Madras International Karting Arena (MIKA). MIKA is India’s first FIA-CIK approved kart racing track and is set to be inaugurated on the 19th of September 2024. Reports reveal that the new Karting facility will be inaugurated by Formula racing legend Mika Hakkinen. In addition to this, reports also reveal that the karting facility has been developed with inputs from Formula 1 racing driver Karun Chandhok, India’s 2nd Formula 1 race driver.
MIKA will be located within the MIC complex which also has a Drag racing strip and Rally Cross stages. The 1.2 km track has been designed by a UK-based motorsport design company called Driven International and the track has received the CIK pre-approvals and is internationally approved. Furthermore, the track will also be able to host international racing events such as World Rotax.
Thanks to the new karting track, local talent will get a boost and be able to polish their racing skills as well as reduce the training expenses. The new karting track will also help racers progress to F3 racing abroad saving significant expenses. By hosting international events like World Rotax, local talent will also be able to compete here in India instead of traveling to Europe further reducing costs.
Madras Motor Sport Club has been promoting motorsports in India since 1953. MMSC built its own race track near Chennai which was inaugurated in 1979 and secured FIA Grade-2 international certification in 2014. The motorsport complex also has been further upgraded with an international-standard Paddock. It also comes with VIP hospitality suites, 20 spacious garages and a separate Paddock all within the circuit. MMSC has hosted events such as the Porsche Super Cup, Formula Campos, Formula Asia, Asian touring car championships, Formula 3, Tata Prima Truck racing championship and the FIM Asia Road Racing Championships.
