Jeep has showcased its advanced off-road driving technology. On the occasion of the National Autonomous Vehicle Day in the USA, the American SUV brand demoed the latest prototypes of the company’s automated off-roading technology.
A team led by Neda Cvijetic, Head of AI & Autonomous Driving at Stellantis showcased this technology in Moab, Utah. Stellantis is the parent company of the Jeep, and is developing this technology exclusively for the SUV brand.
This tech was fitted in two electrified Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models. According to the company, this autonomous technology can improve the off-road experiences of veterans, as well as those who are new to 4×4 train driving. It is also said that this tech can help owners in everyday situations as well which could be challenging.
Apart from this new tech, Jeep is already selling its 4xe electrified four-wheel-drive system in its vehicle on sale today. The 4xe drive consists of a traditional ICE engine paired with a pair of electric motors. The 4xe equipped SUVs are plug-in hybrid EVs as well. They offer an all-electric driveable range as well as feature regenerative braking.
When off-roading, the electric motors improve the crawl performance of the SUVs as well. APart from these, the newer 4xe models boast a vehicle to load connected feature as well, allowing owners to run their electrical appliances via the car’s battery.
As per Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO, this tech is expected to help customers across the world to enjoy adventure. The technology has real-life use cases both on and off the road. The full video showcasing the features of this autonomous technology will be released in a couple of months.
That said, it will be a while before this technology is seen available on the cars currently on sale.
