Looks like Jeep India is gearing up to launch a new variant of the Compass SUV. These will be new diesel automatic variants with two-wheel-drive. The aforementioned trims will be an affordable option to those customers who want an automatic but don’t need the all-wheel-drive capability. According to a media report, this new two-wheel-drive Jeep Compass could be launched on 16 September 2023.
It is said that Jeep is likely to launch the Compass 2WD AT in five variants. These could be from the Longitude trim and upwards. The report also estimates the price of this powertrain option to start at INR. 27 lakh.
Meanwhile, the Longitude+ version could come with features such as a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging. Jeep could also offer the 2WD AT in Limited and Limited Black Shark Editions.
The top-end meanwhile will remain the S version. Jeep is likely to offer this variant with the new powertrain as well.
Other changes on the 2WD AT Compass could include few exterior enhancements like a new grille and updated alloy wheel.
It is also reported that few dealerships have commenced bookings for this, albeit unofficially.
The Jeep Compass comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. This MultiJet II unit makes 170 HP and 350 Nm of torque. The diesel also comes with a 6-speed manual as standard. Additionally, customers can opt for a 9-speed torque converter automatic.
With the Compass petrol no longer being offered, customers might have faced a void in the 2WD automatic variants, which could have prompted the company to launch a diesel 2WD AT model.
According to a media report, Jeep is working on a new four-cylinder, 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine for the Compass. This engine first debuted with the Jeep Renegade back in 2018.
In terms of power output, the motor develops 130 HP with a six-speed manual and 150 HP with a six-speed DCT. Overseas markets having the Compass on sale have already transitioned to this updated petrol motor since 2020.
It is also expected that this 1.3-litre unit could take anywhere from 18 to 24 months to get the calibration, validation and homologation processes completed for Indian application. Hence, Jeep is looking at 2025 launch at the minimum.
