It seems that Jeep is considering re-introduction of a petrol engine in the Compass SUV. Earlier this year, Jeep discontinued the Compass’ 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit. The move came as the engine was not able to meet the BS6 Phase 2 emission norms.
Now, with a leadership change at the company, Jeep is looking at bringing in a new petrol motor within the next two years. The same could also be offered with the Meridian SUV.
According to a media report, Jeep is working on a new four-cylinder, 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine for the Compass. This engine first debuted with the Jeep Renegade back in 2018.
In terms of power output, the motor develops 130 HP with a six-speed manual and 150 HP with a six-speed DCT. Overseas markets having the Compass on sale have already transitioned to this updated petrol motor since 2020.
It is also expected that this 1.3-litre unit could take anywhere from 18 to 24 months to get the calibration, validation and homologation processes completed for Indian application. Hence, Jeep is looking at 2025 launch at the minimum.
Furthermore, a new generation model for the Jeep is expected by 2026. Hence FCA could wait for the model change before offering this option.
Jeep Compass numbers have plummeted to 250-300 units per month from the earlier 550-650 units. This means that the contribution of the petrol motor was significant ~ close to 50 percent in total sales by volume. Now, after discontinuation, Jeep officials have realised the lower sales numbers.
The Compass’ popularity in markets like Delhi-NCR means customers there prefer a petrol option over diesel due to the 10 year rule. It is reported that in Delhi-NCR, the petrol model had a 80-20 split with diesel for the Compass.
The Meridian could also be helped by a petrol motor by attracting a new set of clientele.
