Jeep has introduced the Compass with a mild-hybrid powertrain in the European market. Interestingly this mild-hybrid electric powertrain is not just capable of providing engine assistance during lift-off. But, the MHEV powertrain is capable of propelling the SUV in pure electric mode as well. Jeep is also offering the same on the Jeep Renegade. Jeep also claims that the new versions of the MHEV powertrain offer up to 15 per cent lower consumption and CO2 emissions than the previous petrol models.
The electric motor of the Jeep Compass comes with a 48-volt 15-kW that offers an output of 20 Bhp of power and 55 Nm of torque. The electric power unit is paired with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 130 Hp of power and 240 Nm of torque. The engine is matched to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The Pure Electric mode is capable of operating the vehicles during bumper-to-bumper traffic and while parking the SUV. The brand has not revealed the range that the mild-hybrid electric system can offer in pure electric mode.
The new four-cylinder turbocharged engine has also been optimised for hybrid usage and thermodynamics. The brand reveals that the engine works on a Miller cycle which improves thermal efficiency and offers a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. The engine also gets dual valve timing, special ‘high-tumble’ intake ducts high-pressure direct injection system, operating at up to 350 bar etc. The powertrain also features Intelligent Brake System, which includes an ‘auto-charge’ feature. This uses mixed regenerative braking to maximise the recovery of kinetic energy and improves efficiency.
The Jeep Compass comes with an e-Launch which can start the vehicle using only the electric motor. The electric motor provides the start-up normally seen in automatic vehicles thanks to the e-Creeping function. The speed can vary but is equivalent to a petrol vehicle going 0-kmph to the equivalent of the petrol engine idling in first gear or reverse. The Compass also offers e-Queueing, which provides ease in traffic jams and a ‘stop & go’ pattern in full-electric. Also, using e-Parking, the Compass can be propelled only using electric power to ensure a practical and quiet experience.
