Jaguar Land Rover first to deliver ‘always-on’ what3words capability

Jaguar Land Rover has become the first automotive manufacturer to integrate what3words global location technology. All of the automaker’s product range will get the functionality via a software-over-the-air (SOTA) update. The highlight of this is the ‘always-on’ functionality. This also means drivers can utilise the system without a data connection. Integrated what3words will now be available for all new and existing JLR vehicles that come with the advanced Pivi Pro infotainment system.

What is what3words?

what3words divides the globe into 3×3 metre squares. The technology then gives each one a unique combination of three words. Hence the name, what3words. Instead of typing a complete address, users can use the unique combination of three words from the dictionary to tell someone an address. Integrating the system into a car’s infotainment has its benefits. The integration means one can quickly enter an accurate and short address.

Jaguar Land Rover’s what3words Integration – Details

Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘always-on’ technology works without a data connection. The automotive manufacturer has completed more than 1.3 million vehicle-level updates using the always-on, always-connected capability. In addition, the company also completed more than three million engine control unit updates. The what3words integration also makes it a part of the always-on technology.

Delivering the integration is HERE Technologies. The company has been the automaker’s navigation partner for the past 25 years. HERE’s end-to-end, connected driving services include turn-by-turn guidance and real-time traffic updates. These features enable a personalised experience. Furthermore, the technology intuitively guides drivers through their entire journey.

Jaguar Land Rover says the world-changing technology is all about simplification. The technology helps customers find their way anywhere in the world without worrying about connectivity. The partnership with what3words further highlights JLR’s SOTA capabilities. The SOTA capabilities allow the company to offer always-on, always-connected services.
