Jaguar Land Rover EV plant shelved off; quality issues?

As per the latest report published online by Reuters, JLR’s EV production plans in India have been cancelled internally. The main reason behind this move is said to be the supplier parts not matching with the quality-price proposition of JLR.

Last year in November, JLR’s EV wing had a brief discussion with its suppliers in India for providing various parts under a price bracket. However, as per the report, JLR has completely suspended the talks with the suppliers now.

It seems that due to the variable quality-price proposition, the financial structure of JLR functioning its production in India has been hit. Earlier, JLR had joined hands with Tata to manufacture its Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform that is bound to house various upcoming EV models like the Ranger Rover Sport EV, etc.

Additionally, Tata Motors is the one that has received a big setback due to this decision. It is because the upcoming Tata Avinya EV range was going to share the EMA platform and other components with the JLR EVs.

One of Tata’s officials spoke to Reuters, stating that Tata is now internally discussing the possibilities of shifting to more economical and domestic parts by making design and economic changes.

Tata has already been showcasing the Avinya EV for two years now at the annual Auto Expo. However, it was slated to debut in early 2026, but it seems impossible now due to the JLR’s decision.

Our verdict

JLR’s decision of not producing EVs in India will have an adverse impact on the suppliers and Tata’s future EV plans for the Indian market. Tata has been eyeing the expertise of JLR’s technology and innovations in its upcoming cars with the help of the collaboration. While this news is not yet official, the agreement seems to be over internally.
