Iconic American two-wheeler brand Indian Motorcycles has voluntarily recalled three of their products in the United States. The 2019 Indian Scout, the 2019 Indian Scout Bobber and 2019 Indian Scout Sixty. The safety recall is for a fault at the production line for a faulty brake system and the brand has notified that 2,742 motorcycles could be at potential risk. It is important to note that no injuries or accident have been reported due to the faulty brake components.
According to the report, the 2019 Indian Scout and Scout Bobber equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) manufactured with a brake system fluid fill process that may not have met quality standards at the assembly line. To further explain, a small amount of air may have remained within the brake system. Only 4.47% of motorcycles out of the total population could have the bubble of air in the braking system.
The presence of air in the brake line could lead to the degradation of brake performance on some units equipped with ABS and if left unchecked it may affect brake performance increasing the risk of a fall. The fault can be identified if the force required to activate the brake lever decreases resulting in a soft feel and feedback along with diminished braking performance.
Indian Motorcycle dealers will contact and will update the affected population through various communication channels and the fault will be remedied by bleeding the brake system. The brake system components meet all quality standards and will not be replaced but the brake fluid within the brake system will be replaced through a standard bleed process to evacuate any remaining air from the system.
At the assembly line, all the production was temporarily halted so that all motorcycles could be manually bled to evacuate any air from the brake system and all measures have been taken to improve the process.
