Hyundai Motor India is gearing up to introduce a new hybrid SUV, which will be strategically positioned below the Tucson in its lineup. This move is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to expand its hybrid vehicle offerings in the Indian market.
The new SUV, internally codenamed Ni1i, will be slotted between the Alcazar and the Tucson. This positioning aims to fill the gap in Hyundai’s SUV portfolio, offering a premium yet affordable hybrid option for Indian consumers. Hyundai’s decision to introduce a hybrid model comes in response to the increasing popularity of hybrid vehicles in India, driven by rising fuel prices and environmental concerns.
The Ni1i is expected to be slightly longer than the Tucson, which measures 4,630mm in length. This extended length will likely translate into more cabin space, particularly in the third row, making it a spacious three-row SUV. The design will incorporate Hyundai’s latest design language, featuring a bold and modern exterior with sleek lines and a robust stance.
The new SUV will be Hyundai’s first hybrid model for the Indian market. There is no information about what the SUV will be based on and what its powertrain will be. It is anticipated to feature a petrol-hybrid powertrain, possibly based on the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It will be paired with a small electric battery and an electric motor. We could also see a non-hybrid version of the same positioned between the Creta and the Tucson.
Hyundai plans to manufacture the Ni1i at its newly acquired General Motors facility in Talegaon, on the outskirts of Pune. The company has invested significantly in upgrading this facility to meet the production demands of the new model. The production target for the Ni1i is set at around 50,000 units annually, with a significant portion expected to be hybrid variants.
The Ni1i will compete with the Toyota Hyryder and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Hyundai aims to capture a significant market share by offering a hybrid alternative in this competitive segment.
