Hyundai, Skoda & Hydrogen – What’s Happening?

Hyundai and Skoda could be planning to join hands to develop a new Hydrogen power mobility ecosystem. According to reports, the two major car manufacturers have already signed a memorandum of under standing (MoU) for the development of the Hydrogen mobility ecosystem. Sources reveal that the MoU has been signed at the Korea-Czech Republic Business Summit in Prague and was attended by the VP & Head of Global Commercial Vehicles & Hydrogen Business of Hyundai Motor as well as by the CEO of Skoda Petr Novotny. According to reports, under the MoU Hyundai will be responsible for providing the fuel cell system and technology for the global markets where Skoda has its operations.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Beyond Mobility

Hydroden is a crucial element in the development of a sustainable society especially in the transportation business. However, both brand’s will also asses the feasibility of using fuel cell system in applications beyond mobility, revealed reports. However, the brands have not yet revealed what type of vehicles are likely to be developed with the hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Green Hydrogen

Currently, Hydrogen is extracted using natural gas which is composed of carbon and hydrogen. This is the most affordable way to produce hydrogen but emits greenhouse gasses during the extraction process. However, there are ways to produce Green Hydrogen as well. Once, Hydrogen fuel becomes mainstream, the more expensive Green Hydrogen is likely to come in to play which offers the zero-emission promise and is also being hailed as the fuel of the future, revealed Hyundai.

Green Hydrogen is extracted using electrolysis of water which splits the H2O molecule into H2 and O (2 parts of Hydrogen 1 part of Oxygen). The process requires electricity which when sourced from renewable sources such as wind an solar will reiterate with the zero-emission promise. The Korean company in 2021 also announced its collaboration with Next Hydrogen Corporation to jointly develop an alkaline water electrolysis system to produce clean Hydrogen.
