Under the Safer Cars For India initiative, Global NCAP has revealed more crash test results of the cars Made-in-India. Global NCAP has revealed results for the popular hatchbacks Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Hyundai Santro. The WagonR and Santro both have secured a 2 star result. Both the A-segment hatchbacks are very popular in the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki’s WagonR has achieved a 2 star safety rating for adult protection and a 2 star rating for child safety. The WagonR hatchback comes with a front driver airbag as standard feature and the hatchbacks body structure was rated as unstable by the authorities. The footwell area of the WagonR was rated unstable as the ABC pedals could get displaced and cause damage to lower legs. For adults, the head protection was rated as good and neck protection for driver was good as well. Global NCAP rated chest protection as weak for both the front passengers. Child occupant safety also received poor results on a 3 year and 18 month old dummy.
The Hyundai Santro received 2 stars for child safety and 2 stars for adult safety. The Santro also offers a single front airbag as standard fitment. The structure of the Hyundai Santro was also rated as unstable along with the footwell area. Head and neck protection for adult occupants at the front was rated as good. The chest protection for the driver was said to be weak and marginal for the front passenger. Child occupant safety also got poor results as the companies did not have a CRS for the test. There was poor protection to the head of a 3-year old dummy with limited protection on its neck area. The 18th month dummy received acceptable protection.
Both cars do not offer 3-poit seat belts for all occupants, which could have bumped up the safety rating by a margin.
