Hyundai Motor has premiered two high-performance EV concepts – RN22e and N Vision 74. The brand has been improving its product lineup over the decade and is getting even stronger with the new range of electric vehicles. The two new performance concepts also signal the future of performance at the South Korean carmaker. We take a closer look at the RN22e, which uses the recently unveiled IONIQ 6 electric sedan as its base.
The two concepts are rolling lab concepts. Thus, don’t expect to see a production version of the RN22e. However, previous RM concept vehicles led to major advancements for Hyundai road cars. Thus, Hyundai will test and verify new technologies using these two concepts. The brand will then use the tech from these concepts in future N road cars.
The R22e Concept is based on the company’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This is also the first time Hyundai is using the platform as a lab project. The RN22e uses an all-wheel drive system with a motor on each of its axles. These motors produce a total output of 576 HP and 740 Nm of torque. Powering the electric motors is a 77.4 kWh battery pack with a 400-/800-volt architecture. Hyundai also claims it can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in under 18 minutes.
Hyundai says the R22e also features a torque vectoring system using a twin-clutch setup. However, the brand did not specify how it actually works. Using the system, drivers will be able to choose the torque split between the front and rear. To change the settings, they will have to use the drive mode selector.
The R22e also gets a fixed rear spoiler and a much sportier appearance than the regular IONIQ 6. The EV concept also features Hyundai’s trademark matte blue N colour scheme. The brand says that the R22e will also provide the feel which is usually missing from performance EVs. For this, the R22e generates “N Sound+” sounds using the exterior and interior speakers. Hyundai has even added fake shift vibrations.
