Hyundai reveals Ioniq 5 EV mid-size crossover

Hyundai reveals a new electric vehicle named Ioniq 5. This will be the first model under the new ‘Ioniq’ electric sub-brand. The car based on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) mixes the traditional skateboard design with a new elongated wheelbase style giving it a very funky and futuristic look.

Battery and Motors Used

Ioniq 5 will have two battery pack sizes, a 58 kWh and a 72.6 kWh with two motor layout options. The combination of a single-motor with the 72.6 kWh battery gives the longest driving range which is about 480 km on the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) cycle. With this configuration, the car produces 214 HP of power and 350 Nm of torque, whereas the dual-motor layout coupled with the 72.6 kWh has the maximum power output, which in numbers translate to 302 HP of power and 605 Nm of torque. Using the above configuration the electric car can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in under 5.2 seconds. The third configuration which is the entry-level offering pairs the single motor with the 58 kWh battery pack producing 167 HP of power and 350 Nm of torque.

Interiors

Another highlighting department of this new electric crossover is the interiors. Hyundai claims to use eco-friendly sustainable materials for most of the touchpoints like seats, headliner, door trim, armrest and more. The front seat gets the electronically adjustable function and meanwhile, the rear seat passenger takes the leverage of the flat floor. Hyundai is also offering the so called ‘Universal Island’ centre console which can slide back by 140 mm to enable more space in the cabin. In terms of safety, Hyundai is offering all the aids like forward collision-avoidance assist, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, intelligent speed limit assist, driver attention warning, high beam assist and more.

Launch Date

There are no official updates regarding the launch of the Ioniq 5 though some sources suggest that the electric crossover will likely hit the European roads by mid-2021 and then to the US market in late-2021. Reportedly Hyundai is also planning to launch a compact electric SUV for the Indian market which will position itself below the Kona.
