Hyundai reveals 500km range ‘E-GMP’ EV platform for IONIC & Kia Electric Vehicles

Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce 23 Battery Electric Vehicles and sell 1 million electric vehicles worldwide by 2025. The brand also announced that its plans to introduce 11 dedicated EV models and recently, in August 2020, the company also introduced the ‘IONIQ’ brand dedicated towards electric mobility. Now Hyundai Motor Group unveiled its new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a dedicated battery electric vehicle platform, at the ‘E-GMP Digital Discovery’ event. 

The brand has also announced that from 2021 the E-GMP will underpin the IONIQ 5, Kia Motor Corporations dedicated EVs lined-up for 2021 and other models that will be revealed in the future. The new platform has been designed to accommodate electric powertrains and has several advantages over conventional internal combustion engines. The new platform not only offers more interior space but also increased flexibility for development, more safety features, powerful driving performance and range. 

The E-GMP architecture will reduce the complexities in development through ‘modularization and standardization’ and it can be used in various segments such as CUVs, SUVs and Sedans. The E-GMP will also have the capability of achieving 0-100 kmph in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 260 kmph. Through ‘modularization and standardization’ it will be easier for Hyundai Group to strengthen its EV leadership within a short period of time. 

The E-GMP offers improved cornering performance and driving stability and is engineered for optimal weight distribution as well as a low centre of gravity. The platform also features the world’s first mass-produced integrated drive axle (IDA) and a five-link rear suspension system which is typically used in mid and large-sized vehicles. 

The battery also gets a support structure made of ultra-high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel components that are able to absorb the collision energy through energy-absorbent sections of the body and chassis. The strong load support structure also minimizes the collision energy to the power electric system and battery. The load distribution also prevents damage to the passenger cell. 

The E-GMP has the capability to support 50kW~150kW charging system that is common for most EVs equipped with a 400V system, however, the brand is also developing an 800V system with 350 kW fast charging capabilities making it future proof. The brand has also revealed that E-GMP architecture is capable of delivering a maximum range of over 500km on a single charge.
