Hyundai has announced that the self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi in the United States has successfully completed the process similar the a U.S. driver’s license test. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxi was put to the test is the same way an examiner would to a human.
The criteria also remained the same and the robotaxi has to make lane changes and it is speed is continuously monitored. In addition to this, the IONIQ 5 ws also subject to tests such as left turns, maintaining the lane, a complete stop, as well as its reaction time.
A DMV Certified Driving Examiner with 25 years of experience, Kandice Jones, took the thorough test of the IONIQ 5. Kandice also reveals that she has failed “thousands and thousands of students in the interest of public safety,” which leads us to believe that the IONIQ 5 robotaxi will not be treated differently.
Hyundai also shot a film showing the all-electric, self-driving IONIQ 5 robotaxi completing a series of public-level driving tests, including road driving in Las Vegas, U.S. The film starts with an interview with Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired American woman, and her mother Ruth.
Pearl is unable to obtain a driving licence due to a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. The video highlights everyday mobility challenges for the physically impaired, and also shows the significance of autonomous driving technology. Thanks to the IONIQ 5 robotaxi which is based on Hyundai’s ‘Progress for Humanity’, the autonomous car promises to fulfill Pearl’s dream of independent mobility. The film also showcases the robotaxi’s potential to safely provide freedom of mobility.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxi features a suite of advanced sensors, combining LiDAR, radar and cameras. Motional, Hyundai’s Autonomous Driving Technology developer also showcase its ability navigate the Las Vegas Strip, as well as
the city’s suburban areas.
