Hyundai India sales drop, replaced by Mahindra

As per the latest car sales data released by the Federation of Automobiles Dealer Association (FADA), Hyundai has been replaced by Mahindra in the top-3 car manufacturers list. This has come as a result of a consistent sales decline that has affected Hyundai as well as its sibling brand, Kia.

Speaking of the numbers, the total sales volume in February 2025 for Hyundai was 38,156 units, as opposed to 47,549 units the previous year. This also led to a drop in the company’s total market share in February, which has dropped to 12.6 per cent from 14 per cent.

Meanwhile, replacing Hyundai’s second position in the top-3 list is Mahindra. The Indian car maker has risen from 11.7 per cent market share to 13.1 per cent in February 2025 by selling 39,889 units. This has made the company one of the top-3 car makers as of now.

Tailing behind is yet another Indian car brand, Tata, which sold 38,696 units in February. However, it is still the Maruti Suzuki brand that is immovable from its top car manufacturer position as it managed to sell 1,18,149 units in February.

Now that Hyundai has dropped to the fourth position in the top 10 car makers list in India, it is being followed by Toyota on the fifth position. The Japanese car brand sold 21,561 units in February itself, thanks to its collaboration with Maruti Suzuki, through which it sells the Glanza, Rumion, and Hyryder cars.

Our verdict

Hyundai’s sales drop is majorly a result of the price hikes that are done to counter the increasing input costs. Moreover, the taxation policies by the government are not supporting manufacturers and buyers to encourage trade.
