Hyundai i20 gets 3-star crash test rating by Global NCAP

Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has announced the crash ratings for the Hyundai i20 hot hatchback for the Indian market. The charitable institution has been testing cars for sale in the Indian market under the #SaferCarsForIndia initiative. Under the initiative, GNCAP strives to highlight the safety aspect of each car so that customers can make an informed buying decision. Global NCAP has revealed that the 2022 Hyundai i20 has received 3-stars for Adult Occupant Protection and 3-stars for Child Occupant Protection. The car has scored 8.84 points out of 17.00 Adult Occupant Protection and 36.89 points out of 49.00 points for Child Occupant Protection.

Hyundai i20 – Adult Occupant Protection

Global NCAP has revealed that the i20 offers adequate protection to the driver’s head and good protection to the passenger’s head. However, both the driver and passenger received good protection in the neck area. The driver’s chest showed weak protection, and the passenger’s chest showed good protection. The driver’s and passenger’s knees also show marginal protection. The knees could impact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard supported by the Tranfascia tube.

GNCAP also reveals that the driver’s tibias and passenger’s right tibia showed adequate protection. In addition to this, the passenger left tibia showed good protection. The bodyshell was rated as unstable, and it was not capable of withstanding further loadings. The footwell area was also rated as unstable. The car also comes with SBR for all passengers as standard.

Hyundai i20 – Child Occupant Protection

The Hyundai i20 comes with ISOFIX anchorages as standard. The GNCAP fixed the child seat for the 3-year-old in the FWF (Forward Facing) position using ISOFIX anchorages and a top tether. This prevents the excessive forward movement of the head. During deceleration, it showed poor protection to the neck but good protection to the chest.

The 1.5-year-old dummy child was installed in the RWF (Rearward Facing) configuration with the ISOFIX anchorages and support leg, offering good protection to the head and chest; however, the CRS marking was permanent. The recommended CRSs also did not show any incompatibility. The Hyundai i20 comes with a lap belt in the middle seat of the second row instead of a three-point seatbelt.
