Hyundai gears up for EV launches in India with BEV E-GMP Platform

Written by Kanad Kalasur

Hyundai Motor India Limited has launched a dedicated all-electric platform for future electric cars in India. The BEV E-GMP platform will underpin the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the first model to feature this dedicated platform.

What is E-GMP?

The dedicated battery electric vehicle platform has been dubbed as the Electric Global Modular Platform or E-GMP. The platform consists of a chassis that includes the battery, motor and power electric system. The battery is an advanced unit that offers a high range, a bi-directional charging plug and an integrated charging control unit. This means that it can allow the high-voltage battery to power other electronic devices.

Further, being modular in nature, the E-GMP can be used to underpin vehicles of various body styles. All cars will feature innovative interior packing, flat floors, slim cockpits and a spacious cabin. Hyundai says that the E-GMP has been developed on four pillars. These are Modularity, Performance, Reliability and Usability.

Modularity:

It will allow different vehicles with diverse motor configurations, battery sizes, and body types to be underpinned by this platform.

For performance

Hyundai claims that the E-GMP platform will benefit from Ultrafast charging – customers can enjoy up to an 80% top-up in just 18 minutes using a 350 kW DC charger. Further, thanks to the lower centre of mass, the cars based on this platform will deliver high performance – the IONIQ 5, for instance, gets a top speed of 185 km/h along with a 5-link rear suspension that offers superior ride comfort and handling.

For Reliability

Hyundai has incorporated a front energy absorption zone, and the E-GMP has an energy distribution structure that efficiently dissipates energy from any impact away from the passenger cell. The battery gets Ultra High Strength Steel structure for enhanced safety as well as an 8-point battery mounting to ensure sturdy battery-to-floor connection.

In terms of Usability

The E-GMP platform has been developed keeping in mind the future mobility needs of customers across the globe. The platform will offer maximum interior space, and intelligent space management using features like an AC system located in the engine bay, a flat floor, and no central tunnel hump.
