Ola working on an electric sports bike?

Written by Kanad Kalasur

After working on and releasing electric scooters in the market, Ola Electric could now be working on an electric motorcycle. Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal hinted at this move when he conducted a poll on social media.

What does the poll say?

The poll was conducted on Twitter with the aim of asking the users of the platform to share their preferred motorcycle type. Options for this question included a sports bike, which garnered maximum votes, followed by a cruiser, an adventure bike and a cafe racer. While more details about the bike are unavailable, other information about it could come out sometime in March 2023. During the S1 Air launch, the CEO had hinted that more details would be out by Holi.

Would an electric sports bike be a success?

Currently, many of the offerings in the electric space include scooters – be it Ather, Ola, Bajaj etc. For many users, they would like a sports bike but in an electric avatar. So far, there is a dearth of electric motorcycles in the market. This means there is an excellent opportunity for Ola to tap into a new segment.

Further, offering power and range, for example, that is equivalent to 150cc motorcycles, would mean maximum demand in the sports bike segment. In terms of features, the Ola could offer the same touchscreen system, all-LED lighting, and features like speakers to play music, a USB charging port and more.

Ola’s Electric car

Ola has also been teasing us about its upcoming electric car. While still in its infancy, the electric motorcycle could likely be launched before this electric car. Current electric vehicles on sale and upcoming in the mass market segment include Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tigor, Tata Tiago, Hyundai Kona Electric, MG ZS EV, Mahindra XUV400 and BYD Atto 3. Ola’s electric car would have to compete with these.

What is Ola Electric selling right now

Currently, Ola has on offer three products – The S1, the S1 Pro and the S1 Air. They are priced from INR 1,00,000, INR 1,30,000 and INR 85,000, respectively (ex-showroom, including the FAME II subsidy).
