Hyundai’s Exter SUV comes with a powerful yet efficient 4-cylinder engine. In addition to this, the Exter also gets an AMT automatic transmission with the 1.2-litre petrol motor. But is the Exter with the Automated Manual Transmission easy to use as well as an affordable family SUV? Let’s find out.
The Hyundai Exter Smart Auto AMT comes with a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission. Thanks to the AMT gearbox, driving the Exter, especially in bumper to bumper city traffic, is super easy. What else is easy? It’s the Exter’s price. The AMT variant of the Exter is very easy on the pocket and starts with a price tag of INR 8,22,900 ex-showroom.
The Exter with Smart Auto AMT returns an ARAI-certified mileage of 19.2 km/l. The Hyundai Exter comes with a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine developing 83 PS of power and 113.8 Nm of torque. The 4-cylinder motor is inherently more refined compared to the 3-cylinder competition. So the NVH package is far superior.
While sedate drivers can use the 5-speed Smart Auto AMT by just slotting the gear stick in drive and using the two pedal system. Gen MZ buyers of the Exter also get sporty Paddle Shifters on the steering wheel giving full control to the driver. The driver can also assume control over the gearbox using the shift stick by slotting it in manual mode and shifting-gears, by moving the gear stick up(+) and down(-).
With an affordable price tag and uncomplicated, trouble-free drive, the Hyundai Exter is one of the best family SUVs. While its direct competitor may be slightly affordable, however, it misses out on convenience features such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is available on the Exter. Even the competitive variant that is more expensive than the Exter, comes with a smaller size touchscreen.
In addition to the infotainment system, the Exter also comes with digital instruments cluster, fabric seat upholstery, floor mats, multi regional language UI support for infotainment, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, voice recognition, steering wheel with audio & bluetooth controls, electric folding ORVMs with LED indicators, C-type USB charger, height adjustable driver’s seat, etc.
Higher-spec variants on the Hyundai Exter AMT come with features such as a Sunroof with Voice Commands in English and Hinglish. The Exter also gets an 8-inch HD infotainment system with Bluelink technology on the top-of-the-line Sx(O) Connect variant. This variant also gets an automatic climate control system. Higher variants also come with rear air-conditioning vents, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, fabric + leather seats and more.
The Hyundai Exter comes with a 3815mm overall length which is compact enough for urban environments but features a 2450mm wheelbase and with smart packaging, the Exter offers spacious interiors for 5 adults. The car also comes with ample knee and foot room offering comfort even on long drives. The Hyundai Exter also comes with good headroom thanks to 1631mm overall height. Even the shoulder to shoulder space is quite ample thanks to the Exter’s 1710mm width (without ORVMs).
For those long drives with the family, the Exter gets a 391-litres boot space according to the V213 standards. This converts to a couple of cabin size bags along with multiple backpacks and laptop bags. In addition to this, the Exter also comes with a parcel tray which can carry small nitty gritties. The Exter also comes with smart storage spaces on the doors which can carry a litre of bottle each as well as two cup holders in the centre console.
