Honda recalls CBR1000RR-R SP litre-class superbike

Honda is recalling 89 units of the CBR1000RR-R SP superbike in the North American market for a faulty suspension system. Only 1% of motorcycles in the recall population may potentially have the defect. Honda has issued a Stop Sale Notice to dealers for certain models of the flagship superbike. The 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R SP with the VIN range JH2SC821*MK000004 to JH2SC821*MK000092 produced between 28 April 2020 – 29 July 2020 are under the recall.

What is the Problem?

During installation at the assembly line, the rear suspension connecting plates could be in the reverse direction. This means a counterbore side that should face the fastener is now on the inside. The nut must fit inside the recessed countersunk area but on the faulty models, it is sitting flush with the cushion plate. As a result, the cushion plate is prone to cracking and failing under stress. This could lead to sudden sagging in the rear suspension and may cause loss of control and a crash. It is important to note that no accidents of a crash, injury or death have been reported pertaining to the recall.

The Solution

Honda is rectifying the problem at the assembly line by implementing visual references for correct and incorrect installation. Additionally, a visual inspection with checkmarks also goes into the assembly inspection process. Honda will contact the owners of the vehicle under the recall by mail. The registered owners can then bring their vehicle to an authorized Honda motorcycle dealer. The vehicle will go through an inspection and only the model with the incorrect installation will get replacement connecting plates and hardware. The replacement of plates and hardware is free of cost to the customer. Customers who have already paid for the replacement at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement.

Recall Timeline

The dealer notification began on 5th April 2021 and owner notification will begin around 7th June 2021.
