Honda planning 10 electric two-wheelers for India

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has an ambitious plan in the EV space. The target is to introduce 10 electric two-wheelers in the next 10 years. With this, they aim to cater to the entire spectrum of zero-emission vehicles in the future.

Details Of Upcoming Honda Electric Vehicles

As per reports, the plan is to offer a diverse range of powertrains, speed categories and body types. The products developed will have the flexibility of both fixed and swappable alternatives.

As we understand, Honda has already kickstarted the EV game plan with two projects. These are codenamed GJNA and K4BA. One of them is Activa Electric, which has its architecture based on a fixed battery construct. Whereas the other in making is a moped that will come with a swappable alternative.

As of now, Honda is amongst the few key mainstream manufacturers yet to enter the EV market. But, with this ambitious plan, it may become the first Japanese two-wheeler brand to enter the rapidly growing EV market.

We understand the first EV from Honda Motorcycle will hit the roads in March 2024. This could very likely be Activa electric. Then we could see another model in September 2024. In the first year, Honda has targeted production of 1-1.5 lakh units between both models.

Honda’s Swappable Battery Alternatives

To augment the swappable battery alternatives, Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Limited (HEID) has already established a base in Bengaluru. These swappable solutions are currently available in the three-wheeler industry. Set up in November 2021, this battery-swapping service was started by Honda to support electric auto rickshaws. As we know, HEID started with a network of 70 swapping stations in Bengaluru, which will now extend to other cities as well. With the demand for EVs going up, the need of the hour is a viable charging infrastructure. With mainstream players like Honda coming in, we expect to see good traction in this segment.
