One of the benchmarks in the cruiser segment, in terms of technologies, is Honda’s Goldwing. The full-dressed tourer is laced with all the modern-day technologies that would even shame a few motor cars but one thing that it lacks is the radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control technology that is being offered on motorcycles such as the Ducati Multistrada V4 and the BMW R1250RT.
Now to lock horns with the new cruiser/tourer motorcycles Honda is also planning to bring in the new tool which not only adds to the comfort but also offers added safety. According to a media report, leaked patents of the radar-assisted system have emerged the internet which leads us to believe that the Japanese manufacturer is likely to roll out the new technology on a facelift model next year.
The new technology could be the same used by other manufacturers such as Ducati and BMW. Both brands use the radar system developed by Bosch which is the size of a modern-day action camera around (70 x 60 x 28 mm) and weighs around 190 gm. On the Honda Goldwing, the patents reveal that the compact and lightweight forward-looking unit will sit in between the headlamps in the V on the nose.
The new radar technology can be used for obstacle detection & ranging and has the ability to detect the vehicles in front of the motorcycle and through controlled braking and acceleration, the distance from the vehicle can automatically be adjusted. The system is expected to be tweaked for motorcycle riding and the interventions would be smoother than what we observed in four-wheelers. The system will also be tuned to ensure that the rider has control over the vehicle when it accelerates or decelerates. The radar unit also opens the possibility to add safety features such as Forward Collision Warning and Braking Assistance in case of an emergency.
Apart from the Ducati Multistrada V4, the BMW Motorrad R1250RT the new adaptive control system is also likely to make its way to the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure.
