Honda is gearing up for a significant leap with its all-new modular platform, codenamed PF2. This versatile platform will serve as the foundation for a range of future products, including sedans, SUVs, EVs, and hybrids. Unlike a dedicated EV platform, Honda’s PF2 will support both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains.
The Next-Gen Honda City
The sixth-generation Honda City is poised to make a splash in 2028. Here’s what we know so far:
- Platform: The new City will be the second model built on the PF2 platform. Expect enhanced structural rigidity, improved safety features, and a more dynamic driving experience.
- Design: While specific design details remain under wraps, Honda’s commitment to innovation suggests a sleek, futuristic look. We anticipate aerodynamic lines, LED lighting, and a spacious cabin.
- Powertrains: Honda aims to regain its mojo with the next-gen City. The PF2 platform will accommodate various powertrains, including ICE, hybrid, and EV. This flexibility aligns with Honda’s multi-powertrain strategy.
- Sales Strategy: The current City sedan has faced declining sales, but Honda hopes the new model will turn the tide. The City’s success in India and as an export hub (especially the WR-V) has encouraged Honda to expand its footprint.
- Hybrid Possibilities: While Honda had a first-mover advantage in India’s hybrid market, the City hybrid faced pricing challenges. With the new City, we hope to see a more competitive hybrid variant.
Our Thoughts
The Honda City has been doing fairly well in the Indian market since its launch. It has gotten better over the period and now offers combines good performance and features. The new generation is still a few years away and we might even see a minor facelift before that happens. The PF2 platform is an important update for Honda’s future cars and we are happy that Honda is working towards better tech and features. Also the fact that this not a complete EV platform, puts our minds at ease that we will still see ICE Hondas in the future.
