The Made in India Honda Amaze has been recently subjected to Global NCAP crash test and has faired 4-stars for occupant protection. The car is made for sale in the African markets, and as per the Global NCAP protocol, the cars are tested in a frontal impact with a 40% offset at 64 kmph.
The car has obtained 14.08 points out of 17 points which can be translated to 4-stars for the adult occupant safety, and 8.16 points out of 49 points for child occupant safety giving it a low 1-star rating. The Honda Amaze comes standard with driver and passenger frontal airbag, front seat belt pre-tensioners, driver side seat belt reminder, 4-channel ABS and child seat ISOFIX anchorages as standard.
For the adult occupants, the protection offered to the driver and passenger’s head and neck was rated good. The chest area shows adequate protection on both the driver and passenger and the knee protection for both driver and passenger shows marginal protection as the knee could impact in dangerous structures behind the fascia. As per Global NCAP, the body shell was rated stable and could withstand further loading. The foot well is also considered stable in a frontal offset impact test.
In terms of child occupant safety test, which was carried out on a 18-year old child dummy and a 3-year old child dummy, the rearward facing child seat was fixed using the cars seat belt, and according to Global NCAP, during the test the armrest opened and broke the child restraint system’s handle which caused injuries to the head. The seat for the 3-year old child dummy was installed with a forward facing seat using the standard ISOFIX and top tether which prevented excessive forward movement during impact. The passenger airbag cannot be disengaged, which makes it impossible for the rearward facing child seat to be safely installed.
The model used was a right hand driven 5-door Amaze which is the African-spec model Made in India. Global NCAP uses the same protocol to test the India specific model and is expected to get similar results.
