The Honda Activa, an iconic scooter, has achieved yet another remarkable feat. The scooter crossed the milestone of 3 crore sales. This momentous occasion arrives after 22 years since its initial launch. And looking back at its journey showcases the enduring popularity it has enjoyed for over two decades.
Introduced as a 102cc scooter in 2001, the Activa immediately caught the attention of buyers. with its convenient CVT transmission and the cleanliness of its four-stroke engine. Its unisex design also contributed to its appeal. Thus resulting in a respectable sales figure of 55,000 units in its first year.
With limited competition in its segment, Activa continued its reign unchallenged. It became the market leader in the scooter segment in 2004-05. And reached the milestone of 10 lakh sales the following year. This is just 55 months after its launch. In 2008-09, the engine displacement was increased to 110cc. Further accompanied by a claimed 15 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency. By this time, monthly sales had reached the 50,000 mark. A figure that was equivalent to the annual sales at the time of its launch.
The subsequent years witnessed significant developments, including the introduction of the Activa 3G in 2014-15 and the very first Activa 125. With an expanded model range and unwavering popularity, Activa achieved 1 crore sales in 2016. Thus, becoming not only the best-selling scooter but also the best-selling two-wheeler in India.
Activa’s growth trajectory accelerated exponentially. As the next 2 crore sales were accomplished in just 7 years. Thus reaching the milestone of 2 crore sales in 2018. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Honda managed to achieve the remarkable milestone of 3 crore sales in 2023.
At present, the Honda Activa has received an upgrade in the form of an H-smart keyless system. This provides added convenience to its users. Looking ahead to the future, there is a strong possibility of the Activa making its appearance in an electric variant. Further aligning with the industry’s shift towards electric mobility.
