Harman International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., focuses on connected technologies and solutions for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets. And recently, Harman announced its latest introduction – Harman ‘Ready Care’. The new system detects driver behaviours and assists via context-aware interventions for safer and smarter drives.
Harman says Ready Care is a set of solutions – Cognitive distraction, stress-free routing, and personalised comfort. These can work together or independently to improve safety and reduce driver stress. The latest solution from Harman joins its expanding portfolio of products designed and built to deliver consumer-focused experiences at an automotive grade.
Ready Care deliver higher levels of safety and wellbeing through the integration of several key technologies. In addition to relying on cameras to detect driver drowsiness, Ready Care measures real-time driver cognitive load to identify when potential distractions arise. Then, the system offers tailored intervention strategies to maximise safety.
Furthermore, powering the experience are newly developed machine learning algorithms. These gather and process data from in-vehicle cameras as well as sensors to monitor a driver’s state. Ready Care can then generate custom in-vehicle cabin prompts. These prompts help trigger a range of behavioural responses. Thus, increasing awareness, alleviating stress or stimulating relief.
Ready Care measures the driver’s eye activity as well as state of mind. For this, it uses an infrared global shutter camera with active illumination. Thus, it can survey the driver’s face in low as well as high light environments. It then provides real-time data on facial expressions, eye gaze, eyelid openings and more.
Additionally, it also uses the Harman Cognitive Distraction feature. It is a real-time driver visual and cognitive load measurement tool. The feature deciphers when the driver is mentally distracted. Then, it initiates multiple and simultaneous in-cabin vehicle intervention responses. The feature measures real-time cognitive load and separates driving tasks from other mental activities. Additionally, it also separates the visual and manual distractions to enable tailored intervention strategies that maximise safety.
Harman Ready Care is compatible with multiple navigation engines. It can provide an alternate route selection to lower the driver’s stress levels while on the road. It does so by detecting real-time stress factors like traffic jams or weather and adapting accordingly. Thus, this helps reduce drivers’ stress or anxiety.
All journeys and drives are unique. Thus, using advanced machine learning technology, Ready Care provides personalised intervention strategies. These strategies are tailored to the individual and their driving experience. Harman Ready Care delivers closed-loop interventions via an SDK. This will allow OEMs and third parties to integrate any vehicle feature or function. These can include features like HVAC control, media content or seat sensors.
