The growing infrastructure and roads also require safer and better-equipped vehicles. Therefore, Global NCAP is updating its testing protocols to enhance the safety quotient of vehicles sold in the Indian and African markets. Under the new test standards, the Global NCAP’s SaferCarsForIndia and SaferCarsForAfrica will require additional equipment as well as safety features to obtain a 5-star rating. The Global NCAP’s 5-star rating is currently the highest rating a vehicle receives in the Indian and African markets. The updated tests will compel vehicle manufacturers to make their cars safer for both occupants as well as other road users.
To achieve a 5-star rating under the new Global NCAP test protocols, vehicles must pass a side impact test. Also, vehicles must also be equipped with ESC as standard and offer pedestrian protection. Global NCAP will conduct the side-impact test on the driver or passenger side using biomechanical or modifiers criteria, reports suggest.
Additionally, the testing agency will also evaluate pedestrian protection by assessing the risk of injuries to the head, pelvis and legs of the pedestrian. Global NCAP will also award additional points to vehicles with an autonomous emergency braking system. This will help set a higher bar for protection in the automotive industry as well as keep the customers well-informed of their purchases.
Back in 2014, Global NCAP launched the SaferCarsForIndia campaign to promote safer vehicles in the country. From 2014 to 2022, the charitable organisation has completed more than fifty safety assessments. Global NCAP and its SaferCarsForIndia campaign have played an important role in improving the safety of Indian cars. Thanks to Global NCAP and their safety regime, manufacturers as well as the Government of India are pushing for further safety features on cars reducing road fatalities and offering high safety standards that consumers in India rightly demand.
