Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV coming to India in 2021

While the world is still digesting the fact that the Mustang nameplate has moved electric, and also as a crossover SUV, rumours now suggest that this thing could come to India. It is being said that come 2021, Ford could launch the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV in India, imported via the CBU route. Yes, it will be an expensive electric car to own, much higher than the current Mustang muscle car which is already on offer. However, since it is an electric vehicle, the Mustang Mach-E will attract lower GST. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E will then join other high-end EVs which will include the Audi e-Tron and the Jaguar i-Pace which are soon to be launched.

On international soil, the Mustang Mach-E is sold with 2 battery options, but it is unclear which one is coming to India. Most definitely, only one variant might be on offer as this would be more of a halo car for the brand, which has recently joined hands with Mahindra to jointly develop cars for India and other emerging markets.

The Mustang Mach-E has a base version which comes with a 75 kWh battery pack producing 258 HP of power or a 99 kWh battery which belts out 289 HP of power; both engines pumping 416 Nm of torque. This is a rear-wheel drive model and Ford claims a driving range of 450 km & 595 km respectively with a 0-100 kmph sprint time under 8 seconds. The other option is a twin-motor AWD variant of the Mach-E which comes with a 75 kWh batter with 258 HP or 99 kWh battery with 337 HP; both producing 582 Nm of torque and sprinting to a ton in under 7 seconds. The range claim for this version is 419 km & 540 km respectively with a top speed restricted to 179 kmph.

Do you think an electric Ford Mustang Mach-E makes sense in the Indian car market? Will there be enough buyers for this one? Is being restricted to a certain km a good idea when you pay over INR 50 lakhs and then wait hours to have the battery charged? Comment on our social media handles and share your thoughts…
