Ferrari has unveiled the new limited-edition special series 812 Competizione and Competizione A. The special models are derived from the Ferrari 812 Superfast. The 812 Competizione is a fixed top coupe while the 812 Competizione A comes with a Targa-Top, paying homage to the Italian brand’s famed open-top tradition.
The Ferrari 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A features the same 6.5-litre V12 engine with several parts significantly re-engineered to improve its performance. Ferrari has worked on the fluid dynamics of the intake system and the combustion chamber. The engine also features internal friction reducing elements and a higher 9,500 rpm redline. This helps produce 830 PS of power from the naturally aspirated unit.
The new engine also comes with 40% lighter titanium connecting rods, diamond-like carbon(DLC) coating on the innards that help reduce the coefficient of friction fuel consumption and wear. The friction reducing coating also improves the performance of the engine. The brand has also redesigned the manifold and plenum and features a system of variable geometry inlet tracts.
The brand has also tweaked the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Though the gear ratios remain the same from the Superfast the brand has calibrated the transmission that reduces the shift times by 5 %. The brand has also improved the cooling efficiency of the special models by 10 % compared to the 812 Superfast.
The higher-revving engine and increased power generate more heat, hence Ferrari had to work extensively in the aerodynamics department to extract this heat away from the engine. The brand has achieved this using cooling flow management. This allows the engine components such as the radiator to remain the same size and weight but dissipate more heat.
Apart from the cooling flow management, the brand has further worked on improving the downforce of the vehicle. Ferrari has worked to reduce and vent turbulent air the 812 Competizione A even in the open-top configuration the design feeds air through the blade intakes on the rear. The brand has also managed to improve the cooling efficiency of the brakes. The car also gets a front diffuser equipped with a passive mobile aero system opens when the car reaches speeds of over 250 km/h.
Ferrari unveiled the new 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A at the recently-opened GT Sporting Activities Department at the Fiorano racetrack. The brand reveals that both cars are dedicated to an exclusive group of collectors and enthusiasts. But, Ferrari has not revealed the price or the number of examples the brand plans to build, but expect high prices and ultra-limited units.
The Ferrari 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A will come with an extended seven-year maintenance programme. The entire Ferrari range also comes with a scheduled maintenance programme which is also available to owners of pre-owned Ferraris.
