Highways Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system on October 31, 2014.
ETC has been already installed at 55 toll plazas and their integration with the Central Clearing House (CCH) operators has been completed on the Mumbai – Delhi route via Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Pilot projects to test the ETC system of 10 toll plazas between Mumbai (Charoti) and Ahmedabad have been tested and were termed as successful. Seamless, cash-less operations are expected to speed up the movement of traffic at toll junctions, which otherwise has been creating problems while commuting.
The government now orders incorporation of ETC lanes as mandatory on all highway projects in the future. A new company by the name Indian Highways Management Company Limited has been setup to overlook the complete ETC process.
Car manufacturers have already started to fit a RFID tag on their latest models which will help in ETC.
