A test mule of the Toyota Innova Crysta has been spotted in Indonesia. It appears to be the all-electric version of the people mover.
What is the Toyota Innova Crysta EV
Earlier this year, Toyota showcased an all-electric version of the Innova Crysta at the Indonesia International Motor Show. While it was showcased as a concept vehicle, looks like the Japanese carmaker is looking at developing an electric-version of the popular MPV.
While more details are not yet available, from just a glance, we can notice that the car has the body of the Innova Crysta sold in India. That said, it gets a completely different grille that is blanked out and a revised bumper. The alloy wheel design is also different from the one offered with the Crysta. There was an electric badge as well which means that this is not a plug-in hybrid model. Also note the blue highlights in the T-badge, which Toyota offers with electric vehicles.
On the inside, it could get an instrument cluster with an eco-meter. It still has analog dials and not a digital display. The concept showcased also had a tachometer, which could mean that it’s not yet a production model.
Other electric-only changes include EV-specific details like battery level, available range, speed, and currently engaged ‘gear’ being displayed on the infotainment screen and an ‘Innova EV’ badge on the headrests.
Toyota had showcased the concept as a way to gauge customer response. No details about the electric powertrain or its specifications were released.
Launch and Production of the Innova EV
This is very unlike Toyota as the carmaker never sells previous generation products simultaneously with the current generation vehicles. It was speculated that the Crysta would be sold along with the Hycross but the same has also been removed from the Toyota’s brand website in India.
This could hence mean either of two things – either Toyota plans to launch the Innova Crysta in an EV form, or is testing out the electric powertrain for a ladder-frame vehicle.
