During the inauguration of a two-day Vehicle and Fleet Safety Workshop, which is jointly organised by the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), Nitin Gadkari announced that the safety ratings are soon going to be introduced for trucks and e-rickshaws.

As per the statement of the Union Minister, the authorities are concerned for the safety of truck drivers in India. Hence, to minimise the road accident casualties, the government is planning to introduce a strict safety assessment testing for truck manufacturers.

This safety assessment will be similar to the BNCAP, which is responsible for assessing passenger cars in India. Mr. Nitin Gadkari also stated that these new safety tests for trucks will be identical to passenger car tests.

Moreover, the uncontrolled population of e-rickshaws, which are manufactured nationwide without stringent laws, will also be addressed soon. The authorities are also developing strict safety assessment tests for e-rickshaw manufacturers, which will be implemented soon.

Additionally, the government is preparing legislation to regulate the working hours for truck drivers in India, who work more than 16-18 hours daily. The fixed working hours will be strictly monitored and help in the reduction of accidents caused due to drowsiness.

Our conclusion

The introduction of truck safety is a big leap forward for the commercial vehicle segment in India. First, the ADAS features and AC were mandated, and now the fixed working hours and strong body shells will save more lives than ever on the Indian roads.
