Continental is expanding its production-ready display portfolio by winning a series of orders for V-shaped displays of more than EUR 1 billion. Continental will integrate the display solution into multiple car models of a global Asian car manufacturer. The new technology provides a large, seamless and individually shaped display to enhance the user experience. The order intake for display solutions now stands at more than EUR 5.5 billion. The first vehicle to feature Continental’s driver-centric display will arrive in 2023.
The Head of the User Experience Business Area at Continental, Philipp von Hirschheydt, expressed his delight in receiving another series order for the state-of-the-art displays. He says the series order also proves the company’s user experience (UX) competence. According to him, the display offers a two-in-one solution and helps simplify capturing important driving information along with superior comfort and ergonomics for the driver.
The V-shape display consists of a flat display with a backlight and a curved V-shaped glass. It extends from the driver’s area to the centre and visually connects the infotainment display and the driver’s instrument cluster. Both the instrument cluster and infotainment screen connect, to form one large surface. The angle and radius of the display have a tilt toward the driver.
The driver-centric placement helps to focus from the driver’s perspective. It does so by placing the person driving in the centre of the information output. The ergonomics that the display provides help reduce distraction and perceive information faster. The reduced distraction helps to make driving safer. The manufacturer can make the new V-shaped display in highly individual shapes and designs.
It utilizes a unique bonding technology, Optical Bonding, thanks to which there is no visible gap or boundary between the instrument cluster and the integrated information display. The result is a seamless V-shaped appearance of the display solution. The free-standing design helps achieve a smooth integration into the curved lines of various dashboard shapes.
The radius of the display allows the driver to see the visual content comfortably from the driver’s seat. In addition, the visual display from both the screens has the same viewing distance to the driver. Thus, the display solution creates a “surround” kind of an experience that can improve the driver’s user experience and driving safety.
