Chinese Wuling Cloud EV to be rebadged by JSW MG Motor India with a new name

Written by News Team

JSW MG Motor India is set to introduce the Wuling Cloud EV, a product of Chinese origin, under a new name. Previously the car was anticipated to be called the MG Cloud EV.

The Wuling Cloud EV, originally developed by the Chinese automaker Wuling, has been showcased at various international auto shows, including the recent Indonesia Auto Show. This electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) is known for its impressive range and advanced features, making it a competitive addition to the Indian EV market.

MG Motor’s Strategy in India

MG Motor, a brand with British roots now owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corporation, has been active in the Indian market for several years. However, it is noteworthy that MG has yet to develop an original product from the ground up specifically for India. Instead, the company has focused on rebadging and localizing existing models from its global lineup.

Despite this, MG Motor has earned praise for the quality of its vehicle cabins and the premium experience it offers in its showrooms. The interiors of MG vehicles are often highlighted for their comfort, advanced technology, and attention to detail, which have resonated well with Indian consumers.

The Need for a Homegrown Product

While the rebadging strategy has allowed MG Motor to quickly expand its portfolio in India, there is a growing sentiment that the Indian market deserves a brand-new product developed specifically for its unique needs and preferences.  A homegrown vehicle could better address local conditions, consumer expectations, and regulatory requirements, potentially offering a more tailored driving experience. This sentiment comes more so when an Indian conglomerate, JSW Group has acquired a significant stake in the company.

The Cloud EV: Features and Expectations

The Wuling Cloud EV, soon to be launched in India under a new name, is expected to feature a 50.6 kWh battery pack, providing a claimed range of up to 460 kilometers on a single charge. The vehicle’s design, which blends practicality with modern aesthetics, includes features such as LED lighting, a spacious cabin, and advanced driver assistance systems.
