Chinese brand Chery wants to enter Indian Car Market with Tata Motors?

According to a news report, Chinese automobile brand Chery is in discussions with Tata Motors to plan its entry in India. Chery Automobile Co. is a state-run car manufacturer in China and is planning a joint venture with Tata Motors in India to launch their products. After SAIC Motor Corp which now owns the British brand MG (Morris Garages), many other Chinese automobile manufacturers are planning to venture in the potentially huge Indian market.

Chery is China’s first automobile brand and was established in the year 1997. It is a state-owned company and has been the country’s largest passenger car manufacturer for 16 years. Chery’s vehicles are sold in more than 80 countries. In China, Chery sells SUVs under the Tiggo series and sedan cars under the Arrizo series. The Arrizo series cars are the EX, GX, 7 and 7e and the Tiggo SUVs are 3x, 3, 5x 1.5L, 7, 8 models and also a new-gen 8 model.

If Chery plans its entry in India, it is expected to come with the new Tiggo 5 which features a fish type mesh grille design on the front, with LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights. When looked from the side profile it features 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, black plastic cladding on the large wheel arches and doors and illuminated door sill. The rear has a ‘C’ shaped LED tail light, chrome double exhaust pipes and chrome accents on the rear bumper. The Interior of the Chery Tiggo 5 has a wing-shaped centre console with an 8-inch colour touchscreen infotainment display which provides more than 200 types of real-time information. The Tiggo 5 gets a sunroof and ergonomically designed high-quality interiors.

In terms of safety, the C-NCAP has rated the Tiggo 5 with five stars and the SUV has four circumferential airbags produced by Sweden Autoliv Company, an all dimension radar system, tyre pressure monitoring system, over-speed alert, Bosch 9.0 electronic safety program, ABS, EBD and traction control system

The Chery Tiggo 5 comes with two gasoline powered engine options:-

  • 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 150 BHP of power and 205 Nm of torque
  • 2.0-litre engine that produces 136 BHP of power and 182 Nm of torque
  • Engine power is transmitted with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed CVT automatic

Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by Tata Motors, already have an equal joint venture in China since 2012, and Chery builds Jaguar Land Rover cars for their consumers in China at the Changshu plant.

Other Chinese car manufacturers which have shown interest in the Indian car market are Beiqi Foton, Geely and Great Wall.
