China based ‘GWM’ to invest USD 1 Billion, signs MoU with Govt. of Maharashtra

‘GWM’ short for Great Wall Motors a multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in China has announced that the brand has signed an MoU (Memorandum Of Understanding) with the Government of Maharashtra in presence of both the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Chinese Ambassador to India, via a virtual meeting. GWM plans to invest USD 1 Billion, in a phased manner, in the state of the art automotive manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra. 

For its entry in India, on 17th January 2020, GWM had signed an agreement to acquire this manufacturing facility which was earlier used by General Motors. The plant has facilities such as a training centre, administrative office building, project management building, a logistics distribution centre and public facilities centre. GWM has revealed that the plant in Talegaon will be a highly automated plant with advanced robotics technology integrated into many of the production processes.

The brand will also benefit from the strategic location of the Talegaon Industrial Park where the manufacturing facility is located. The plant is about 45 km from Pune city and 100 km from the shipping port of Mumbai, connected by road via both a national highway and an expressway. GWM has also announced that with this new venture that brand will be creating employment for more than 3000 people and build a supply chain, in a phased manner.

Apart from the manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra, GWM has a Research & Development centre in Bengaluru, India. The brand also has R&D centres in China, Japan, South Korea, the United States of America, Austria and Germany. GWM also has a sales network in more than 60 countries along with marketing centres in Australia, South America, South Africa, Middle East and Russia. 

On the 5th of February at the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi, GWM showcased its range of ‘Haval’ SUVs, a marquee owned by GWM which specialises in SUVs, GWM EV products and its innovations in connectivity, advanced autonomous systems and intelligent safety.
