Renault has taken the wraps off its latest offering, the Grand Koleos SUV, at the ongoing Busan Motor Show. This new model, comparable in size to the Tata Safari, aims to make a strong impression with its distinctive design, advanced technology, and hybrid powertrain.
Design and Platform
The Grand Koleos adopts a bolder, more modern look than its predecessor, the aging medium SUV sold in Australia. Surprisingly, it doesn’t share its underpinnings with the Nissan X-Trail, as one might expect. Instead, Renault has collaborated with Volvo, and the Grand Koleos is closely related to the Volvo XC40. Built on Geely Group’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), the Grand Koleos measures 4780mm in length, making it 108mm longer than the current Koleos. The wheelbase has also grown by 115mm, promising improved interior space and comfort.
Powertrain Options
In Korea, the Grand Koleos will be offered in both petrol and hybrid variants. Let’s take a closer look:
E-Tech Hybrid: This version combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine with a dual-motor setup and a battery. The total system output is an impressive 249 PS of power. It’s a step toward cleaner mobility, blending performance with efficiency.
2.0-Liter Turbo-Petrol: The non-hybrid variant features a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine delivering 213 PS of power. It pairs with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for a spirited driving experience.
Interior Technology
Inside, the Grand Koleos boasts a thoroughly modern cabin. Key highlights include:
Triple-Screen Setup: A trio of 12.3-inch displays dominates the dashboard. The TFT cluster, center display, and passenger display (for Korean-market models) are all based on the Google Automotive platform.
Augmented Reality Head-Up Display: The massive 25.6-inch AR HUD provides essential information without distracting the driver.
India Launch?
While the Grand Koleos’ chances for an India launch remain uncertain, it could be a great competitor to the Tata Safari, MG Hector and the XUV700. Nissan too has teased the X-trail which means that the Renault-Nissan group has set its sight on the SUV segment. Renault India should seriously think of bringing the Koleos back to India which currently lacks a hybrid in the segment.
