BYD working on new electric scooter? Patent leaks

BYD is reportedly working on a new electric scooter. Recent patent leaks have provided a glimpse into what could be a game-changer in the electric two-wheeler market.

Patent Drawings and Specifications

The leaked patent drawings suggest that BYD is developing a maxi-scooter, which is expected to compete in the 250-350cc segment. This new model is anticipated to feature a power output ranging from 20 to 35 BHP, translating to a battery capacity between 9 to 12 kWh. The design includes several high-performance components such as USD front forks, dual shock absorbers at the rear, a large seat, knuckle guards, a substantial windscreen, split headlamps, and a coaxially mounted swingarm connected to the motor.

Advanced Stage of Development

Reports indicate that the project is in an advanced stage, with most components ready for approval. The only element pending approval appears to be the rearview mirror, suggesting that BYD is close to finalizing the design and moving towards production.

Potential Market Impact

BYD’s entry into the electric scooter market could significantly impact the industry. Known for its innovation and affordability in the electric vehicle sector, BYD’s new scooter is expected to offer high performance at a competitive price. The company has a history of producing cost-effective electric vehicles without compromising on features, as seen with its flagship Han EV.

This product could be a game-changer in the two-wheeler dominant market of India too. Currently, there are very few players offering durable and feature rich electric scooters.

Strategic Move in Electric Mobility

This move aligns with BYD’s broader strategy to diversify its electric mobility offerings. The company, which started as a rechargeable battery manufacturer, has grown into one of the largest EV manufacturers globally. BYD’s expertise in battery technology and electric vehicle production positions it well to disrupt the electric scooter market.
