Chinese EV maker BYD is planning on expanding its operations in India. After the launch of the BYD e6 MPV for corporate and fleet customers, BYD is now planning to enter the mainstream EV market. For this, the company will launch its Atto 3 electric SUV. Earlier reports suggested that BYD will bring the Atto 3 in 2023. However, it seems as if the brand has preponed the launch. BYD will locally assemble the Atto 3 at its plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
According to Senior Vice President of BYD India, Sanjay Gopalkrishnan, the company plans to launch the Atto 3 SUV during the 2022 festive season. After receiving a strong response for its all-electric MPV, the e6, it now plans to enter the personal buyer’s space.
Reports suggest that it aims to sell 10,000 locally-assembled EVs in the country by 2024. The Senior Vice President also stated that the company is considering local manufacturing. However, he did mention it will depend on the response of the locally-assembled models.
BYD will also showcase a wide range of products at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. These products will include hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs, as well as its Blade battery technology.
The stylish electric SUV is available with two battery pack options – a 49.92 kWh battery pack and a larger 60.48 kWh battery pack. Both battery packs will also feature BYD’s Blade Battery technology. The smaller battery will deliver up to 320 km of range. Meanwhile, the larger one will deliver up to 420 km of range. Both figures are as per the WLTP cycle.
Powering the Atto 3 will be a PMSM motor making 204 HP of power and 310 Nm of torque. BYD claims it accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.3 seconds.
In the international markets, BYD generously equips the Atto 3. It gets features like LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment display and more. The Atto 3 also features a complete suite of safety features. This also includes ADAS features. Sources suggest India-spec Atto 3 will also get all the ADAS features.
When it makes its way to India, it will directly compete with the Hyundai Kona Electric, MG ZS EV and the Tata Nexon EV Max.
