Breaking News! Mercedes-Benz India plant not compliant to the pollution guidelines

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has revealed that the Mercedes-Benz India assembly plant is Non Compliant, according to the control guidelines set by the MPCB. MPCB reveals that during a routine inspection conducted on the 23rd August 2024 the board discovered that the Mercedes-Benz Assembly plant in Pune is non compliant. The German manufacturer’s plant in Chakan was set up in 2009 and spreads over 100 acres of land. The Chakan manufacturing facility plays an important role in the CKD/MVP production network in Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. From the Chakan plant the company churns out various vehicles in extension levels for the domestic markets.

Mercedes-Benz’s Bank Guarantee Forfeited?

According to the MPCB, the revelations of non-compliance from such a prestigious brand were not expected. What is actually expected from Mercedes Benz the automotive industry. Mercedes-Benz is one of the top foreign car manufacturer in the country and is expected to set an example in sustainable production practices. The MPCB also revealed it has instructed its regional officer to take immediate action to so that the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant complies with all MPCB guidelines. The action involves a comprehensive implementation of corrective measures. Also, MPCB revealed that they have forfeited the brand’s Bank guarantee of 45 Lakhs. The MPCB also revealed that the remains dedicated to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment and also watch the situation closely. And the board’s primary objective is to ensure the prevention and control pollution and to promote sustainable development.

Mercedes-Benz’ Legacy

Mercedes-Benz is a global luxury automobile company with over 130 years of legacy and the company started its operations in India in 1994. The Chakan production facility now carries an investment of INR 2,200 crores and has the largest installed production capacity for any luxury carmaker in the Indian market.  Mercedes-Benz is yet to comment on this.
