Bosch unveiled its latest eBike innovations for 2023 at Eurobike 2022. The event took place from 13th July 2022 to 17th July 2022. One of the innovations from Bosch for 2023 is the new anti-lock braking system for e-Bikes. Bosch also claims it is the world’s smallest ABS. The brand developed it using motorcycle technology to make eBiking even safer.
Incorrect braking is one of the leading causes of cycling accidents. CEO of Bosch eBike Systems says that the front brake on a bicycle is crucial for shorter braking distances. However, many avoid using it because they are afraid of falling due to its braking effect. He further adds that the Bosch eBike ABS specifically contracts this by greatly reducing the risk of being thrown over the handlebar or falling. Bosch Accident Research also conducted studies that show a reliable anti-lock braking system can prevent 29 per cent of all bicycle accidents.
The new Bosch eBike ABS gets brake components from MAGURA and will be available from Summer 2022. The available modes will depend on the category of the eBike. Customers must check if the bike comes with the system as one cannot fit it later.
More than 40 years ago, Bosch brought the world’s first production-ready ABS for cars to the market. In 1995, Bosch started manufacturing ABS for motorcycles. And in 2018, the brand also launched the world’s first ABS for pedelecs.
And now, Bosch eBike Systems presents the world’s smallest ABS. The system was developed based on motorcycle technology. This also means eBike manufacturers can equip all types of eBikes with the new system from Bosch. The new control unit of the Bosch eBike ABS is 77 per cent smaller and 55 per cent lighter than the previous model. Thus, it blends into eBike’s design thanks to the integration into the system.
The company will offer different modes for the new eBike ABS. Each of these modes is optimally designed for the braking requirements of the type of eBike and surfaces. For eCargo bike owners, the system gets an ABS Cargo mode. It offers fast, safe and accurate braking even when carrying a full load. Meanwhile, for eCity bikes, Bosch is offering the ABS Touring mode. The mode is ideal where changing road surfaces, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings are part of every trip.
On the other hand, ABS Allroad is for easy off-road riding for eMountain bikers. In addition to this, Bosch also developed an ABS Trail mode with professional athletes. This mode is for more demanding trails and difficult terrain. When going back to gravel paths or asphalt roads, riders can switch back to ABS Allroad mode using an app or the Kiox 300 display.
The system activates automatically once you start pedalling. There are two functions which make the braking experience much safer. These are also crucial for the effectiveness of the eBike ABS. The anti-lock function of the front wheel automatically regulates the brake pressure by continuously monitoring the speed of the wheels. Thus, preventing the wheels from locking up. This increases control and stability, especially on slippery surfaces.
It also gets rear wheel lift control. This reduces the risk of the rear wheel lifting up on high-grip surfaces. Therefore, also reducing the risk of being thrown over the handlebar. The function contributes greatly to safer and accident-free riding.
